The coastal child / 2025

The coastal child (2025) is a ritual sculpture created on the basis of the myth Fertile Women in Gevninge Parish and Olga Ravn’s novel The Wax Child from 2023. Two sculptures in beeswax were formed in the autumn of 2024: one was placed in the attic of an alpine hut, and the other was placed in the ground by the coast in Odsherred. There they both matured for nine months. The two sculptures contain longing, sorrow, and hope – on both an individual and a collective level. They exist in a space where they are neither alive nor dead. Created as a manifestation of a forgotten tradition and a contemporary yearning. As part of the work, the sculptures have undergone several rituals. Among others, Gabriel Sacco composed a cantata that was performed in solitude for the sculpture, and it slept in the artist’s bed before being ritually placed underground. A few days before the opening, it was unearthed again and placed in its cradle of cowhide and goatskin, on a bed of plants gathered from the surrounding area.
